A concise overview of Combivent inhaler:

The Combivent inhaler is an inhalation therapy that goes directly to the affected area, lungs in this case and provides required relief. It comes with a metered dose which makes the tracking of doses easy and the patient can refill or get a new one so that the therapy continues. The dug is most commonly used for the management of bronchospasm in COPD and thus makes breathing easy by increasing the airflow.  It is a combination therapy that involves Albuterol and Ipratropium for bringing about bronchodilation. 

How Combivent inhaler acts inside body?

Combivent contains Ipratropium Bromide and Albuterol as its key pharma ingredient. Ipratropium is an is an anticholinergic agent that blocks the muscarinic receptors which result in a decreased formation of cGMP and due to its effect on calcium ions, the contractility of the muscles decreases. Albuterol is a beta 2 agonist that acts as a bronchodilator and opens up the airway for easy breathing.

Dosing regimen and mode of administration of Combivent inhaler:

Combivent is an aerosol metered dose inhaler. The most recommended dosing regimen is 100 mcg/20 mcg, one puff of metered-dose inhaler taken every 6hour. It is a short-acting medication and the regimen should not be changed.  Do not take more than 6 actuations in a day. The dosing provided is not an alternative to the doctor's prescription.

The mode of taking this drug is different, follow it carefully. Breathe out fully before inhaling this medication. After removing the cap of the inhaler, cover the mouthpiece with your lips and breathe in slow and deep as soon as you actuate the dose. Hold your breath for 10 seconds and breathe out. Rinse or gargle after taking the dose.  

Side effects related to Combivent inhaler therapy:

A few side effects that are unfortunately associated with this therapy are swelling of lips, tongue difficult urination, sneezing, sore throat, headache, chest pain, cough, or a runny nose. These side effects, however, affect only a few of the patients.

Few contradictory conditions of Combivent inhaler:

A few medical cases that do not support the use of this medication are

  • Coronary artery disease Heart disease, High blood pressure , and Heart rhythm disorder
  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes
  • Hyperthyroid
  •  Glaucoma
  • Renal or hepatic failure
